Blank Webpage

Ok, you are surfing the web, and suddenly you come to a blank, white webpage, and nothing loads. You think to yourself, “I’ve seen this before. It’s the webpage. That’s the issue.”

Perhaps. But it also may be your browser or the internet connection.

The good news is you are not alone. Many changes have, are, and will continue to occur on the Internet and within your browsers. You may have stumbled on issues involving HTTP/2HTTP/3, and QUIC.

Way too much information, right? I completely understand, so let me attempt to break this down.

Think of the Internet as a super freeway full of cars. You have different lanes that everyone drives on. Each driver’s goal is to reach a destination as quickly as possible. Slow, fast, and HOV lanes all attempt to move traffic quickly. The Internet is the same. Instead of slow, fast, and HOV, there is HTTP/1, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, and something by Google called QUIC. All of these are means to improve speed and your overall experience on the Internet.

Google introduced QUIC in 2013, focusing on speed by simplifying communication. All Google sites, like YouTube, used QUIC to improve services. Not all sites are QUIC compatible.

Then the freeway was “improved, ” meaning better roads and improvements. The “http” everyone sees in the URL – yep, you got it, HTTP 1.0 evolved to HTTP 2.0. Better for everyone, so everyone had to adapt.

So here we are, and another “improvement” is at our doorstep – HTTP 3.0. Another adaptation is upon us.

Hopefully, I’ve given a visual representation you can follow. Well, QUIC isn’t always quick. Sometimes it takes the scenic route and forgets what it is doing. So, if you end up with a blank white screen or an error referencing ERR_QUIC_PROTOCOL_ERROR you’ll know what happened. It’s kind of like QUIC went for gas and left you hanging.

As for HTTP/2 or HTTP/3, I’d recommend checking your browser to see what version it uses. We recommend checking this at Cloudflare:
https://cloudflare-quic.com/

SOLUTION

Like many solutions, this one’s simple – refresh the page. Refreshing the page tells QUIC to get back on the road 😉

If the above doesn’t work, update or change your browser.
